Interview with Mikhail Lerma, author of Z Plan: Blood on the Sand

Check out my interview with Mikhail Lerma. The author of The Z Plan zombie series.

TDWZS (The Dead War Zombie Series): What inspired you to become an author?

Mikhail Lerma: It was kind of an accident really. Just one day, while deployed in Iraq, I just started writing. At first, just to entertain myself and my close friends. It just evolved from there. So I'd say my inspiration was a combination of boredom and the desire to entertain.

TDWZS: Why write in the zombie genre?

Mikhail Lerma: The experts say, so I hear, to write what you know. And from a young age I've always been fascinated by the concept of the dead returning to life and eating the living. A fear/interest introduced to me by my mother. Damn Romero movies. So I paired my zombie hobby with my military knowledge.

TDWZS: Lets's get to the Into Zombies series. What's the series about? How many books are there in the series?

Mikhail Lerma: It starts as a group of soldiers, deployed in Iraq, desperately trying to get home amidst a zombie apocalypse. The members of this group are whittled down by the undead to one man. His goal; to get home to his wife and daughter alone as the world crumbles around him. His story spans three books. In the first he attempts to escape the Middle East. Book two ends with him "making" it to the United States. A book three? Well, I'm still working that one out. But I can promise that just being on American soil doesn't make his travels any easier.

TDWZS: As I'm sure you know there are thousands of zombie books out there right now. What makes yours stand out?

Mikhail Lerma: Most, if not all, zombie books start with their main characters being fairly close to their home. My characters aren't even in their home countries. Another factor that makes my story standout is that a lot of military characters in stories are Special Forces, Rangers, Seals, just absolute badasses. The group of soldiers I created are just regular military personnel. They are, in my opinion, more believable this way.

TDWZS: What's the cause of the zombie apocalypse in your books?

Mikhail Lerma: I hint a some kind of virus hybrid that originates in Africa in book one. In book two I reveal its appearance was a little more widespread than just Africa. And without spoiling anything, book three dabbles in the virology and nature of my fictitious plague. But at this point it could be anything. A radioactive meteor passing too close to earth, a genetically engineered bioweapon, a parasite, or even rage infected monkeys.

TDWZS: Are your zombies the fast or slow moving type?

Mikhail Lerma: In general I'd say they're slow. Old Romero zombies were by far the scariest. A slow and silent killer that sneaks up. If they're fast it becomes more of an action novel than a horror. But I've got a couple of exceptions. Recently reanimated corpses are a little faster, but degrade quickly as decomposition sets in.

TDWZS: Are you trying to make any greater point with your books or just write a good zombie story?

Mikhail Lerma: My book is a lot more than its face value. My main character's story isn't just about his daunting task of getting home, but growing as he journeys. He's faced with a lot of real issues soldiers returning from a warzone experience. He and his friends share a deep bond. They're like brothers. So when they die he exhibits many signs of survivor's guilt and post traumatic stress. Book two is when the reader really starts to see just how badly he's been affected. And while it makes for great character development, the readers are reminded that he's mentally ill. If you remove the zombies from my book, what you have is a very real story of what our veterans experience when they come home.

TDWZS: Do you have an online presence? If so where? Blogs, web sites, Twitter, Facebook?

Mikhail Lerma: Yes I am very active online, and enjoy connecting with readers. You can find all of my social media links on my main website www.MikhailLerma.com.

Mr. Lerma will be hosting a Virtual Book Release Party on Facebook tomorrow August 31st. All are welcome, and he will be giving away a lot of prizes. Here is the link: https://www.facebook.com/events/1538605889694853

The Dead War Series: A Short Story DOCTOR

image
By George L. Cook III
The lights constantly blinked on and off in the arena. Even deep inside the arena known as The Rock Dr. Ariza could hear the sounds of laser fire and explosions outside.
General Holloway had told her to get use to that noise because the day you no loner hear it may be our last.
Dr. Ariza lay on the bunk in her room unable to sleep as formulas and genetic codes swarmed through her mind.
She couldn’t sleep. No matter how she altered the formula or upped the dosage they couldn’t get the nerve agent she had created to work on a permanent basis.
The nerve agent could actually shut down the limited neurological stimulus the brains of the dead received thus shutting them down. The problem was the effect lasted for no more than three hours.
It had taken two month to get the effects to last that long and she had made the leap from two hours to three in a weeks time. She knew she could make it last longer but what was she missing.
She rolled onto her side and punched at her pillow. She was not going to sleep until she figured it out. She sat up on the bed and made the decision to return to the lab and continue working.
Dr. Mitchell would not be happy as he thought that she was working too hard. That was easy for him to say since the entire planet didn’t blame him for the zombie apocalypse. Although they both had a hand in the creation of the Berserker Virus Ariza had done most of the work and the media had made sure the entire world knew it.
Ariza stood up and grabbed her lab cot which lay across her bed. She slipped it on and ran her hands quickly through her hair on a useless attempt at grooming. She knew it was a waste of time. No one here liked her much less cared how she looked and the dead didn’t care about looks just feeding their hunger.
“Hunger?’, Ariza asked stopping in mid motion.
Her face lit up as she ran out the door and down the corridor.
“Whoa” said a familiar voice.
She had been running so fast and so focused on getting to the lab that she didn’t even see Sergeant Reed.
She stopped in front of him. “ Yes Sergeant Reed.”
Reed looked around the area. “ Are you running from something?”
Ariza smiled. “ No I’m running to the lab. I think I just came up with an idea to stop the grays.”
Reed looked Ariza up and down. “ Well slow down. When I see people running I expect the dead to be behind them.”
Reed brushed by Ariza knocking her up against the wall.
Ariza stayed there until he left the corridor. She had gotten used to that treatment while at The Rock. They hated her and she knew the only reason they didn’t kill her is because General Holloway had forbidden it.
She wasn’t naive. The general hated her too but he and his higher ups believed that she could undo what she had done. Although Holloway would never come out and say it he believed in her.
Ariza walked on until she reached the lab. She did the retina scan, typed in her code, and entered the room.
She looked at the mess of paper work on her desk and at the computer on her desk. She sat down to look over her notes. The sound of the zombies moaning strapped to tables at the far end of the room no longer bothered her. She no longer even looked over at them to acknowledge their presence.
She looked began shuffling papers looking for the notes she had taken just two hours ago. Some papers hit the floor. She reached to get them and then by accident glanced over at the gurneys where the dead lay. There were two laying there.
There should have been three.
Ariza sprung to her feet and threw herself up against the wall as she looked at the blood covered third gurney which just hours ago held one of the dead.
The gurney crashed to the floor as the dead creature rose from underneath it. It’s black orbs focused solely on Ariza. Blood and black bile poured from it’s mouth as it lumbered toward Ariza.
Ariza screamed and then threw a book at the dead woman. The book bounced of her head causing her to stumble back but causing no harm.
Ariza ran for the door and tripped over a cluster of wires on the floor. The creature lunged at her.
The door exploded off it’s hinges and Reed stormed in . Reed fired his rifle catching the gray full in the chest and knocking it back against the far wall. Reed continued fired until the dead woman’s brains were splattered all over the wall.
General Holloway and now Captain Levine came running down the hall followed by four other soldiers.
Reed pulled Ariza out of the lab and into the corridor.
“ One of those things got loose!” Reed shouted.
Levine and the four soldiers entered he lab pistols raised. Once Levine was sure the others were strapped in he walked over to the now empty gurney. He reached down and looked at the straps. They had been partially cut.
Levine walked out of the room and directly to Holloway. “ Someone wants Ariza dead.”
Ariza looked up still in a panicked state. “Only two people have access to that lab. Ariza and myself.”
Holloway frowned, “ Actually that’s not true. Myself , Levine and three army scientist have access also.
Ariza made a confused look. “ But why?”
Holloway glared at her. “ Do you think that we were going to just trust what you bastards were doing and not check up on you?”
Reed walked toward Holloway and Levine. “ How the hell do we investigate this then?”
Holloway placed his hand on Reed’s shoulder. “ We don’t. You do.”
Reed looked back at Ariza. “ We can’t leave her alone.”
Holloway looked down at Ariza. “ No we can’t. You watch her for now. I will have a Scout come in to protect her.”
“A Scout?” Levine said.
“Yes a Scout.” began Holloway, “ They follow orders and out of the six suspects we have none of us are beating a Scout.”
Levine nodded. “ Sergeant Liu is still in the area I will get word to him to return.”
Holloway helped Ariza to her feet and held her hand. “ Stay with Reed for now and then when Liu gets here he goes everywhere you go.”
Ariza nodded. “ Thank you General.”
Holloway let go of her hand. “ If you really want to thank me find a damn cure or a permanent way to stop these things.”
Ariza nodded. “Yes sir.”
Levine and Holloway started down the corridor as the other three soldiers began to clean up the lab.
“You want to go back to your room”  Reed asked.
“No.” replied Ariza looking back into the lab, “I’ve got work to do.”

TDWS: Author Interview of The week. Todd Brown: Dead Winter

TDWS: Tell us a little about you. Hobbies, schooling, favorite teams , etc.

Todd: I am an avid football fan and support my Seattle Seahawks no matter how abysmal they may be each year. Football is a religion in my house, and that means about a dozen fantasy football leagues each year in addition to watching games all day on Sunday and supplementing it with a handful of college games during the week. I play guitar and have been in a few bands (although I am a much more talented lead singer than I am a guitarist). I like working with my Border Collie...teaching her little tricks or just taking a walk to clear my head.

TDWS: What inspired you to become a writer?

Todd: I've just always loved it. I enjoy telling a story, and if I can make people feel real emotions for characters who only live on paper...that is the ultimate rush.

TDWS: Why write a zombie book?

Todd: Actually, I had my mind set on something more mainstream until a college writing instructor pulled me up after class. I'd done a zombie short for fun...just to see if I could get away with it. She told me that I had to pursue the genre because my love for it showed in the writing.

TDWS: What is the title of your most current book and what is it about?

Todd: Dead: Winter just released on May 30th. It is the fourth book in the DEAD series and starts a new story arc in the saga. (The series is scheduled to be 12 books long.) It picks up a few weeks after where Dead: Fortunes & Failures leaves off. The first winter is settling in and the survivors are finding out that zombies may be the least of their worries. I do introduce a few new characters, including a young lady named Valarie who has Down's Syndrome and a man in Egypt who declares himself the new pharaoh. It is bleak, dreary, and not full of too much in the way of happiness.

TDWS: Would you put your book more in the action, comedy, or horror category? Is there another category you would add?

Todd: My DEAD series and Zomblog series are both in the horror/action realm. However, I do have something in the works titled That Ghoul Ava which will be more of a horror/comedy.

TDWS: What sets your book apart from the thousands of zombie books out there?

I believe that the DEAD series is very heavy on characters. It is more about the human experience. While it certainly has plenty of the zombie action, it focuses on how the survivors deal with survival. Not everybody plays nice and a lot of people take advantage of the sudden lack of law and order. Also, the DEAD books are presented in a rotating chapter format. There is Steve's story; told in first person, it follows one man and his slowly growing band of survivors -- The Geeks; four guys who thought that a zombie apocalypse would be cool, and they quickly discover that it is not. -- The Vignettes; these are a series of snapshots and shorter peeks into some stories that give an idea how bad things are all over the world. There are around 40 characters in the DEAD series making it very character heavy. Also, with 12 books scheduled, it is one of the longer series.

TDWS: What if anything do you want the reader to take from your book?

Todd: I just want them to be entertained. If I can make them laugh or cry...or get mad...(at the events, not my writing) then I call that a success.

TDWS: Where is your book available?

Todd: All of my stuff is available on Amazon. The best place to check out what I have, as well as any anthologies that I have edited is my Amazon Author's page. http://www.amazon.com/TW-Brown/e/B00363NQI6

TDWS interview with William Rose author of The Seven Habits of Highly Infective People

TDWS: Tell us a little about you. Hobbies, schooling, favorite teams , etc.

William Rose: Well, I've always been fascinated by science and am somewhat of an armchair scientist.  Especially, when it comes to astronomy.  I have two telescopes, a reflector and refractor, and steal away to use them any chance I get.  I also enjoy a lot of outdoor activities such as camping and hiking, but have never really been into sports.  The closest I've come is when I was in my die-hard Battlebots phase.  My son and I actually had plan to build our own robot so we could join in on all the destruction and fun but, sadly, that never materialized.

TDWS:  What inspired you to become a writer?

William Rose: It was partly from writing stories when I was a kid.  I've always had a pretty vivid imagination but really got bit by the author bug when I was in elementary school.  Our school library let students write these little mini-books, which would then be placed on the shelves for other kids to check out.  I loved seeing my books on those shelves.  It was like a drug to me.  I definitely had more up there than any other kid in my school and I could tell other people were checking them out by looking at the cards in the back where people had to write their name when the book was borrowed.  After that, I was hooked.  But the fire was really fueled by my English and Creative Writing teachers.  They gave me the encouragement and guidance necessary to ensure this dream never lost steam and for that, if nothing else, I am eternally grateful.

TDWS:  Why write a zombie book?

William Rose:  I love zombies.  They're unlike any of the other archetypal monsters out there.  All the other ones require a little down time.  Vampires sleep through the day, werewolves turn during the full moon, and serial killers don't strike every day of the week.  But a zombie?  It doesn't matter what time of day it is, what the weather conditions are, or anything like that.  A zombie will just keep coming.  And coming.  And coming.  Which lends itself to another reason I love the undead.  When you take a group of people who have witnessed their entire reality collapse, there's going to be some psychological damage there.  Nearly everyone they've ever known or loved is dead.  Cities are in ruins and the infrastructure is gone.  These people have went from being masters of their world to nothing more than prey.  And, on top of this, the walking dead are a constant reminder.  If they live long enough, they'll eventually become desensitized but the level of detachment and callousness would have to carry over to the living as well.  Every person you meet could potentially become a threat at any given time.  They're living in a constant state of paranoia and fear that never lets up.  And that is a perfect recipe for interesting characters.

TDWS:  What is the title of your most current book and what is it about?

William Rose: My latest novel is The Seven Habits of Highly Infective People and is published through Permuted Press.  The plot is split between two time lines, the first of which is set in the present and centers on a character named Bosley Coughlin.  Through experimentation with drugs and the occult, Bosley has inadvertently opened a portal called The Eye of Aeons which causes his consciousness to spontaneously travel through time and space.  On one of these trips, he shares the mind of a fourteen year old girl named Ocean who lives in a world that has completely collapsed due to the undead apocalypse and ensuing food wars.  Ocean was born into this environment and has never known any other type of life.  Her story makes up the second time line and is set entirely in the wastelands of the future.  While sharing her mind, however, Bosley forms an emotional connection with the girl and vows to do anything he can to prevent the suffering awaiting her.  Upon returning to the present, Bosley meets Clarice Hudson, a woman who is beginning to display the seven symptoms of the infection that will level the world.  Through Clarice, Bosley realizes that he may very well be able to stop the coming apocalypse, but only if he is willing to challenge every notion he's ever held about right and wrong.

TDWS:  Would you put your book more in the action, science fiction, comedy, or horror category? Is there another category you would add?

William Rose: There's a little bit of all those things in the book, but if I had to classify The Seven Habits I would say it's a blend of horror and science fiction, as is a lot of my work.  The scifi aspect isn't hardcore.  I don't, for example, go into detail about how the Eye of Aeons scientifically enables Bosley's consciousness to travel through time, partly because Bosley doesn't really understand the process himself.  It's just something that happens which he's come to accept.  Most of the science in the book stems from his theories about the emerging disease in his timeline that eventually reanimates the corpses who define Ocean's world.

TDWS:  What sets your book apart from the thousands of zombie books out there?

William Rose: As far as I know there's not any other zombie novels out there featuring drug induced time travel, so there's that.  But there's also not really a lot of zombies in the book.  It's a story about characters who continually have to make some very difficult decisions in the name of survival, so my protagonists might not be what most people would think of as heroes.  They operate in moral gray areas and in essence are very flawed individuals.  Their weaknesses, failings, and justifications put them into some horrific situations and the tale is more about surviving in a zombie infested world rather than surviving wave after wave of undead attacks.  This had led some reviewers to suggest that even people who don't generally enjoy the zombie genre would like The Seven Habits.

TDWS:  What if anything do you want the reader to take from your book?

William Rose: What I want people to take away from the book, and the series as a whole, is that right and wrong are not necessarily always clear cut choices.  Most people don't simply wake up and think, "Hey, I believe I'll commit an atrocity or two today!"; consequences often dictate the course of action and people have their reasons for what they do.  They might not always be good reasons, mind you, but these decisions are usually justified in their own minds in some way.  And that's truly the underlying theme to The Seven Habits

.

TDWS:  Where is your book available?

William Rose: It's available from all major online retailers in both ebook and print versions.  The audio book version is available on Audible.com and, of course, links for buying a copy can be found on the Permuted Press website.

TDWS:  Where can you be contacted?

William rose: More information on my work, including a link to download the free novella Apocalyptic Organ Grinder, can be found atwww.williamtoddrose.com  I am also on Facebook and Google+ and love hearing from my readers, so anyone can feel free to hit me up there as well.

This review is from: The Dead War Series: BOOK 1 (Kindle Edition)
A short read but action packed and very intense. The action sequences left me breathless and their were a few scares. I loved the main character, Sergeant Richards. A new action hero is born. Can't wait for book two.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dead War, February 19, 2012

This review is from: The Dead War Series: BOOK 1 (Kindle Edition)
It could do with a bit more editing and spell checking but all in all it's a pretty good story. I would like to see more in this series in the future. The spelling mistakes are minor and not all that distracting. Having someone else read it first and point them out can easily prevent it in future editions.

Set in the future, the main story is about a scout who has to deliver a message to another military camp and has to make his way across a zombie infested city to do it. He not only meets up with the undead cannibals but the living type as well. I don't want to give too much away as the story is fairly short.
Even an old hillbilly like me enjoys a good zombie story when it's done well and this author did a pretty good job of it. I've already bookmarked his main page so I can keep track of more additions to this story.

( Note from the author. The book has been edited since Roddy's review. )

5.0 out of 5 stars Zombies vs the US Army!, February 26, 2012
By BKC This review is from: The Dead War Series: BOOK 1 (Kindle Edition)
I really enjoyed this book. The action was great and there was rarely a moment when the action slowed down. The zombies in the book are the good old fashioned slow moving kind but the soldiers carry up to date mid-21st century weapons making for some great battle scenes. If you like action, zombies, and military hardware this is a story for you.
