THOMPSON: A Free Dead War Series Short Story

THOMPSON By George L. Cook III

AUTHOR’S NOTE: THOMPSON takes place during the events of The Dead War Series Book One. For a brief moment the two stories actually intersect with a character that you might recognize from book one although that character is not actually named in THOMPSON.

I wrote Thompson because I noticed that there were a lack of strong and heroic women in book one. That was later corrected in books two and three with the addition of Gabbard and Sgt. Manning. I hope that you enjoy this short story. If you have read book one it should fill in a gap for you about a particular scene and if you have not I hope it gets you to want to check out book one.

George L. Cook III

The loud screech of laser rifles and the moans of the dead filled the air as Sergeant Thompson and her platoon advanced on dozens of the dead.

Thompson was a petite darker skinned black woman with a no nonsense attitude and a knack for keeping her men alive.

She ordered her men forward as the dead fell. They had to reach the kids stuck on the second floor of a building only twenty yards away.

“Douglass!” Thompson yelled.

A corporal ran to her side, “Yes sergeant.”

The platoon neared the doorway of the building and formed a protective perimeter around the door. Thompson tapped Douglass on the helmet, “Hold your ground here. I’m taking two men and going inside to get the kids!”

Douglass nodded as he blasted one of the dead back over the hood of a car from which it had came.

Thompson tapped two soldiers on the helmet and then started into the building. She was met immediately by two of the dead. She smashed one in the face with the butt of her rifle as one of the soldiers behind her shot the other in the head.

The creature Thompson had hit slammed into the wall. Thompson quickly flipped her rifle and shot it between the eyes.

The three soldiers started up the stairs. As they reached the top of the staircase they saw eight of the dead attempting to break down the door of the apartment where the kids were.

“Light em up!” Thompson shouted.

The soldiers opened fire. The doorway exploded in bursts of blue light, blood, and black bile, as the heads of the dead exploded.

Thompson ran to the door before the last of the dead even hit the floor.

“Open the door!” she yelled, “It’s okay. We are here to get you out of here!”

Soon she could hear furniture moving and a minute later the door opened. Three girls between the ages of five and ten stepped out crying as they ran to Thompson. She hugged them. She was a soldier but at one time she was a mother. She wanted to make them feel safe.

“Sergeant!”, shouted one of her men, “We gotta move they can’t hold the perimeter outside forever.”

Thompson looked at the soldier and nodded. She then looked down at the girls, “We gotta move fast babies okay. Once we get outside keep moving and don’t look back. I will make sure you get to safety.”

The group started for the front door with Thompson in the lead. Thompson ran out of the doorway and nodded at Douglass, "Lets move!"

The group of soldiers and children began moving quickly as Thompson led the way methodically shooting down the dead. One of her men yelled out. She turned to see him being dragged underneath a car.

“Keep moving!” , yelled Thompson.

Some of her men who had started back toward the car reversed themselves and fell back in line while shooting down many of the dead as they protected the rear of the group.

“Shit sarge!”, yelled Douglass pointing to dozens of oncoming dead.

Thompson turned toward the oncoming dead, “Keep moving. I will lead them off!”

“I’m staying with you sarge!” , yelled Douglass as he ran to her side.

Thompson pushed Douglass back, “No, get those girls and my men out of here!”

Douglass reluctantly led the others away. Thompson saw the girls looking back their eyes filling with tears. Thompson had promised to get them to safety and dammit she would.

Thompson screamed to attract the dead. They all soon turned their attention to her. She then ran to the nearest car and placed a grenade on top. She hit the red button on top and ran to three more cars to do the same as the dead began to swarm around her.

She climbed on top of one of the cars and began shooting at the dead with her pistol. As soon as one of the dead fell another came to take its place. Thompson looked to see her men and the children reach the end of the street. She smiled. Then the grenades went off.

Thompson was thrown in the air and landed with a thud behind a car as the body parts of the dead flew through the air. Thompson saw smoke and flames and then blackness.

She woke up an hour later in incredible pain. Her stomach hurt badly. As her vision became clear she saw that one of the dead was feeding on her intestines. She was too weak to scream. She watched with terror in her eyes and her mouth opened in a silent scream as the thing pulled more of her intestines from her body.

She did not want to become one of those things. “Please God don't let this happen.” , She cried.

That's when he stepped into view. A man in an all black uniform and holding a laser pistol. A Scout.

Zombie Movie Review: Dead Heist, Hip Hop gangstas vs vampire/zombie hybrids

I recently signed for Netflix which has given me access to a sh*t load of zombie movies. Most bad but many fun none the less. One movie I checked was a 2007 straight to DVD (remember those) flick Dead Heist. The official synopsis below:

Four friends plan the perfect small town bank heist, but choose the wrong night. Their plans go horribly wrong when vampiric zombies attack the town and trap them in the bank. Can they escape with the money and their lives?

My synopsis would be much shorter, Hip Hop gangstas vs zombies or vampires.

That synopsis pretty much sums up the entire movie. The best part of the movie is 80s rapper Big Daddy Kane showing up as a scientist turned zombie/vampire hunter. Kane steals the show as does a good job of not taking his role or the movie to seriously. Neither does director Bo Webb which leads to a fast paced (80 minutes) movie that gets to the gory action ASAP. How the zombies/vampires came to be is briefly explained by Kane's character as having something to do with some type of artificial blood his team was creating.

The make up and special effects are nothing special but better than the average cheap zombie flick. The acting is no where as bad as one would expect and the movie delivers on the gore and the action. The last 20 minutes is a bullet riddled gore fest that should excite most fans of the genre although it does strain credibility. But then again doesn't a zombie movie stretch credibility?

So on a scale of 1 to 10 I'm give Dead Heist a 6 and recommend you check it out.

The movie is available on Netflix or through Amazon's Instant Video. You can access the movie on Amazon Instant video by using the link below. It's $2.99 to rent.

New Film: "Cowboy Zombies"

Check out this new trailer for the movie Cowboy Zombies. The title pretty much describes the movie and if you can get past the horrible acting it looks like it might be fun to watch.

In the Old West, on an ordinary day, the sun rises as usual and people go about their daily business. On this particular day, the dead (with an appetite for human flesh) also rise, and the day becomes a fight for survival in this action horror film from Director Paul Winters. It's the Arizona Territory, 1870's, and Marshal Frank Wilcox, along with a Buffalo Soldier from the U.S. Army, will galvanize a group of disparate survivors to fight back against the living dead. It's a world gone mad that the Marshal discovers in the town of Crumpit, as a disparate group of characters are doing battle against the unthinkable. Joined by an Apache Chief and the Marshal's outlaw prisoner, the group must learn how to survive in a time where the dead walk. Helping to lead the fight is Preacher Black, a half mad preacher and the towns only doctor, and Roseann, the proprietor of the Double Peach Saloon where the group is hunkered down. Will there be another Dead War Series book?

Hey all, George Cook here.

After the ending of The Dead War Series Book Three: War I have been asked whether the series will continue.

The answer is yes. Yes there will be another Dead War Series book. There are still many battles against the dead and the "others" ( don't want to give away spoilers to anyone who has not read the trilogy ) to be fought. There are still stories to be told about the Peacemaker Platoon and their war with the "others".

I have been busy running for re-election for my board of education seat. I'm proud to say that On Nov 5 2013 I was re-elected for another three years and now I can get back to my writing. The story is all laid out it's just a matter of my lazy ass getting to work. I have already started a prequel and another series of short stories. So just bare with me and in a few months time there will be more of The Dead War Series than you can handle.

Thanks to all of you that have supported the Dead War Series I really appreciate it.

Why George Romero turned down a chance to work on The Walking Dead

George A Romero, the father of zombies and the man who transformed the horror film with Night of the Living Dead, has revealed that he turned down the opportunity to work on the massive US television show, The Walking Dead.

“They asked me to do a couple of episodes of The Walking Dead but I didn’t want to be a part of it,” Romero told The Big Issue. “Basically it’s just a soap opera with a zombie occasionally. I always used the zombie as a character for satire or a political criticism and I find that missing in what’s happening now.”

2. Tyreese needs some alone time.

3. It's a small miracle everyone doesn't have a drinking problem with the walkers and all.

The issue with tweeting The Walking Dead spoilers is a two way steet

NOTE: This was written back on 10/13/2013 but I believe it also pertains to the 02/09/2014 Season 4 mid-season premiere!

Okay unless you live under a rock you know that The Walking Dead season four premiere is tonight. Millions will tune in and just as many will be tweeting their happy little hearts out. Unfortunately this will lead to spoilers along with fan reaction being tweeted. Many wont be happy about that but avoiding spoilers is a two way street.

Now most will be careful so that our fellow TWD fans on the west coast who wont get to see the premiere until later wont have the show spoiled for them.

A few others will post spoilers like crazy. Now personally I think that those people should be dragged out into the street, have their hands laid out flat on that same street, and then smashed with a sledgehammer as a subtle reminder to not post spoilers again.

But it has been brought to my attention that in the United States and most civilized countries doing that would be illegal and would probably lead to an extended stay in prison. ( except maybe in Florida )

But I think we also have to be honest about some of the people who cry about spoilers. Now if you can't see the show earlier because it airs later that's one thing but to cry about spoilers two or three days after an episode has aired is bullsh**.

There are things you can do to avoid spoilers. The most obvious thing to do is stay the f*ck off twitter until you actually watch the show.

I know some DVR the show or watch it On Demand and then watch it at their leisure. But when a show is as popular as The Walking Dead you can't wait until three or fours days after an episode has aired and not expect to read spoilers online.

I think those who hate spoilers also have an obligation to watch the show in a timely fashion as to avoid spoilers. I think those that wait too long to watch a show or just as much as fault as those that post those same spoilers.

Well that's my two cents. What do you think?

AMC Developing Walking Dead Spin-Off

[ SOURCE ] AMC is expanding its lucrative Walking Dead franchise.

The cabler announced Monday that it is in the early stages of developing a “companion series” — aka spinoff — to its monster smash, slated to launch in 2015.

Series creator Robert Kirkman will serve as an exec producer on the offshoot, alongside fellow EPs Gale Anne Hurd and David Alpert.

“Building on the success of the most popular show on television for adults 18-49 is literally a no-brainer,” said AMC prez Charlie Collier in a statement. “We look forward to working with Robert, Gale and Dave again as we develop an entirely new story and cast of characters. It’s a big world and we can’t wait to give fans another unforgettable view of the zombie apocalypse.”

Added Kirkman: “After 10 years of writing the comic book series and being so close to the debut of our fourth, and in my opinion, best season of the TV series, I couldn’t be more thrilled about getting the chance to create a new corner of The Walking Dead universe. The opportunity to make a show that isn’t tethered by the events of the comic book, and is truly a blank page, has set my creativity racing.”

Would you nuke a major city to stop a zombie apocalypse

Ok folks here's the scenario.

You are the President of the United States and a zombie apocalypse has broken out in New York City. You have shut down the all ways out of the city and the outbreak seems pretty much confined to the city. The military has strongly suggested using a tactical nuclear missile to destroy the city and stop the outbreak once and for all.

As the president you don't have much to go on as scientist and the CDC are telling you they don't know if destroying the city will stop the outbreak. They don't know for sure if whatever caused the outbreak has escpaed the city as they don't yet know the length of the incubation period. There are also millions who have yet to be infected trapped inside the city and no way to evacuate them.

So what do you do Mr./Mrs. President? Do you give the order to fire that missile and slow down the outbreak or leave the city blocked off?

George A. Romero Completes Script for His Adaptation of The Zombie Autopsies

[ SOURCE ] George Romero, the man who helped make zombie movies into a genre all its own with horror classics like Night of the Living Dead and Dawn of the Dead, has reportedly wrapped up his latest script: The Zombie Autopsies.

It's based on Steven Schlozman’s book of the same name, which follows a medical team tasked with researching the zombie outbreak and trying to find a cure. It’s a neat concept, and could be a refreshing twist on the well-mined genre.

The script is currently being shopped to studios, so all we (and Romero) can do is wait for the time being.

"Zombies" injured by runners during Denver zombie run

[ SOURCE ] Organizers of the nationwide ‘Zombie Runs’ acknowledge their events are getting more violent than they would like.
Sunday, participants suffered some nasty injuries at the 5K race in Denver. They emailed FOX31 Denver with their complaints.
We took their concerns to race organizers.
Autumn Brooks loves zombies, so when the Zombie Run came to Denver she jumped at the chance to get all dressed up in the role, only to find herself getting tackled by a runner who was trying to keep her from taking his brains…
“It was not fun at all,” Brooks says. “I had a large guy tackle me over a boulder and just left me there with scrapes, bruises. I wasn’t planning on bleeding my own blood that day.”
Paramedics say another zombie had her nose broken when runner in a banana costume, of all things, elbowed or punched her in the face.
The Zombie Run is on a 16-city U.S. tour. Here’s what happens:
Runners are outfitted with three balloons around their waists that represent their “brains.” The object of this twist to the run is to finish without letting the walking dead take their brains.
“It’s supposed to be the zombie apocalypse and the runners are running to save their lives, to get to the finish to have an after party,” Brooks says.
The injuries to the zombies in Denver were news to race founder Andrew Hudis, who called Channel 2 to respond to the complaints.
“It goes both ways. Sometimes there are humans that are too aggressive. Sometimes there are zombies that are too aggressive,” Hudis says.
“Zombies are hungry and they want the brains which is the life balloon and they want to just pop as many of those as they can,” Brooks explains.
She says runners got violent while fending off the living dead.
“They were just hostile, had something to prove, and were stiff-arming and taking out as many zombies as they could. They were violent to keep us from snagging them.”
Hudis says they have security, off-duty police officers and EMTs on the course. But with 3,000 people, injuries will happen. “We’ve accepted at some level that it’s not always peaceful,” he says.
